First Aid 101 – First Aid Kits

First Aid for Parents – 24th June 2017

Do you have a first aid kit in your house? Would you know what to do if your little ones fall and knock out a tooth? What types of incidents warrant a trip to the hospital?

At The Nursery, with the help of our wonderful Trainer Noeleen Boyle (www.nbts.ie) we hold Paediatric First Aid courses for parents, grandparents and those minding children. We cover all of the “what if” moments from choking to burns and scalds, from bumps to the head to fever management, from stings to poisons.

But even if you don’t have first aid skills (and we can help you with that!), a good place to start would be to get your hands on a simple first aid kit.

Handy First Aid Kit

Most of us have the bare bones of a first aid box in our homes and it’s often adequate enough, but I think with kids in the house, it’s a good idea to have a more organised box of tricks that you can grab when you need it.  Of course, scarves can replace bandages and frozen peas could replace ice packs but pieces like sterile dressings are really handy to have. As are eye patches, disposable gloves and cleansing wipes.

If I was looking to put together a First aid Kit for the house, this is what I would be getting my hands on:

Suggested Contents for a Home First Aid Kit

  • Watertight box
  • Adhesive plasters assorted sizes
  • 2 medium sterile dressings
  • 2 sterile eye pads
  • 2 triangular bandages
  • Safety pins – Use tape for young children
  • Disposable gloves.
  • Thermometer
  • 2 crepe bandages
  • Instant cold packs – or packet of frozen peas
  • Scissors
  • Non-alcohol wound cleansing wipes
  • Adhesive tape

You can pick up most of these things in your local chemist and make your own first aid box by popping them in an airtight sandwich box and they will last for ages there. But do keep an eye on expiry dates – everything has a shelf life!

Most supermarkets have pre-made kits available to buy. Some local supermarkets often have special events in store and their first Aid kit is a great one. Buy two – have one in the car. You never know when disaster might strike!

All our First Aid courses are held every 6 weeks or so at her premises in Monkstown, Co Dublin. The next course is on Saturday 24th June 2017.
